Tower Performance 2025
First year Architectural Science students participated in the Tower Performance project on October 21, 2025. This assignment is an annual tradition of ASC 102 The Built World. Students are challenged with staging an architectural performance, centered on the construction of a tower. Towers are to be light, occupy no more than one square metre in plan, and aim to reach the ceiling of the Architecture Building’s three-storey central atrium.

DAS Community Spotlight: Faculty & Students Present Installations at Human/Nature Conference
This week, join members of our DAS community at the forefront of a critical conversation on architecture and the climate crisis. Several of our faculty and students are presenting installations as part of AZURE’s Human/Nature conference, which runs October 29th & 30th at the Evergreen Brick Works. The conference addresses the climate emergency by directly linking it to our built environment—questioning how and why we build, demolish, and preserve.
The exhibition features a display of HouseEurope! based on the work of the German office bplus.xyz and the documentary To Build Law by Joshua Frank, presented by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and 3 teams associated with DAS:
-
Associate Professor Julia Jamrozik with Research Assistants and Master of Architecture Students: Teagan Hyndman, Hyo Yeon Tiana Lee, Santino D’Angelo Rozas, and Kyle Do Couto.
-
Instructor Joey Giaimo and his team from Giaimo, including TMU alum Mitchell May and current Master of Architecture students Stenzo Martin, Samanta Ayala, Anahita Kawale, Elaine Nahli, Dean Roumanis, and Shanali Tewarapperuma.
-
Instructor Monica Hutton in collaboration with photographer Amanda Large and local non-profit No Demovictions.

Travel Studios Exhibition Opens November 3rd
Japan, Tokyo 2024 + Barcelona, Spain 2025
Opening: Monday, November 3rd at 5:30pm
Paul H. Cocker Gallery
In our DAS travel studios, students immersed themselves in two cities of extraordinary architectural character: Barcelona and Tokyo. Participating in firm visits, guided tours, and independent exploration, they experienced the diversity of culture embedded in architecture and urban form. from the layered historic fabric of Barcelona to the everyday complexity of Tokyo.
Each city offered lessons in how architecture comes from context and culture. In Barcelona, students engaged with the city’s vibrant public spaces, its integration of art and architecture, and the enduring influence of Gaudí’s modernism. In Tokyo Students studied train stations and the way they functioned as destinations as much as people movers.
Together, these experiences provided a comparative lens through which students could reflect on Toronto’s own urban identity. By observing how other cities negotiate density, mobility, and public life, students searched for insight into the creation of a richer architecture at home. Travel became a form of research and a catalyst for critical thinking.

James Harrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture |
The 2026 Steedman Fellowship invites proposals exploring the theme Collective Form / Forums, inspired by architect Fumihiko Maki’s influential ideas on architecture’s role in shaping pluralistic societies. This year’s fellowship asks how architecture can bring people together, amplify overlooked voices, and engage political and cultural challenges—particularly in the face of climate change and shifting collective values. Open worldwide to architects with a professional degree earned in the last eight years, the fellowship awards $100,000 for research to be completed within 18 months, with results shared through the Washington University and AIA St. Louis communities. Applications, including a portfolio, research proposal, and supporting materials, are due by November 1, 2025. |

Competition - Spatializing Justice: Building Blocks |
Critical intervention into the urban field requires first recognizing the contested spatial and institutional power dynamics that drive today’s urban and bio-regional crises. The 2026 Lyceum Fellowship competition asks participants to first expose and visualize a particular conflict—reflecting on the requisite political, economic, social, and spatial processes—then design the conditions to tackle this conflict. |
