Congratulations to DAS faculty on earning tenure and promotion to Associate Professor

Will Galloway, Julia Jamrozik, and Carlo Parente have earned tenure with promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, effective February 17, 2025.

This professional milestone recognizes their significant and sustained contributions to the Department of Architectural Science (DAS), FEAS, TMU, and the professional community.

TMU Vice-Provost of Faculty Affairs, Dr. Patrizia Albanese, confirmed the appointments with attestations to their impactful service, teaching, and scholarly, research, and creative activities, including professional practice:

Dr. Will Galloway’s SRC record is both substantive and exceptional, integrating cutting-edge research with practical applications in architecture and urban planning…”

Carlo Parente… brings a natural curiosity to contemporary issues in the form of professional practice, applied research and exhibitions as a forum of public engagement.”

Julia Jamrozik has consistently demonstrated excellence in architectural design across a range of formats… The work’s impact and recognition has consistently remained high…”

Please join DAS in congratulating Will, Carlo and Julia on their respective accomplishments.

DAS Students Recognized in un/SHELTERED:
Toronto Design Challenge

Three students from the Department of Architectural Science—MArch student Hunter Kauremszky, BArchSc co-op student Jake Levy, and BArchSc grad Jake Kroft—were among the finalists in the un/SHELTERED: Toronto Design Challenge, a competition organized by Maytree and West End Phoenix to develop innovative shelter solutions for people experiencing homelessness. Their project, Village in a Box, proposes off-the-grid shelters with built-in greenhouse walls, promoting self-sustaining communities. The competition highlighted practical, scalable designs that prioritize human dignity and immediate impact.

Beyond the Wall: Opening Reception February 27th

Thursday, February 27th

6:30 PM

PHC Gallery, 325 Church St.
The exhibition will be on view until April 3rd, 2025.

Beyond the Wall records separation by design—the experience of facing oppressive walls and the ways that people transform them. When confined by a wall, fence, or barrier, we may feel alone, unable to see our experience as one in a series. Through a narrative sequence of case studies, the exhibit reveals parallels between seemingly disparate systems of control. Simultaneously, we are linked by the instinct to find a crack in the wall—a gap through which we can envision a different world or a different wall. This exhibition thus highlights the parallels between various citizen-led interventions that redefine the wall as a surface for self-expression, a shaper of gathering spaces, or something to be transgressed. Here, that effort is humanized and celebrated. The wall is a tool for both control and agency.

Beyond the Wall rejects the designer’s role in enabling the destruction of people, places, and identities in Gaza, Palestine, and beyond. To communicate the real, human experiences behind the numbers, this exhibit captures both the struggle but also the stories of steadfastness, understanding, and visions of a better future. As argued by Micheal Sorkin and Dean Sharp in Open Gaza: Architectures of Hope, “No matter how high the fence or unrelenting the systems of control, Gaza cannot be sealed off from the world.”1
