Let’s All Meet by the Lake:
Designing for Equity on Toronto’s Waterfront

DAS research team has unveiled Equitable Waterfront, a roadmap for inclusivity and well-being in the built environment. As part of the SSHRC-supported Quality in Canada's Built Environment partnership, this initiative redefines design excellence by prioritizing accessibility, equity, and public engagement. Focused on Toronto’s waterfront, the study analyzes award-winning housing projects, explores health and accessibility in public spaces, and evaluates engagement strategies with marginalized communities, aiming to create a more inclusive urban experience for all.

Reclaiming Space: DAS Students Shine in Park(ing) Day 2024

Park (ing) Day 2024

This September, DAS students transformed a parking space on 55 Gould Street into a vibrant public area for Park(ing) Day Toronto 2024. Led by first-year M.Arch student Dean Roumanis, the project turned asphalt into a dynamic bench design encouraging community interaction. Park(ing) Day, a global initiative, challenges the dominance of cars in urban spaces by creating temporary parks. With over 30 activations across the city, this grassroots effort continues to inspire innovative collaborations and conversations about prioritizing people in urban design. Students in the video (1:10 from left to right): Daniel Wolinksi, Jade Yu Tung Wong, Rachel Kim, Marko Jovanovic, Dean Roumanis, Arjun Jain, Dhruvan Modugula, Zain Malik, Avery Jordan.

A Meaningful Farewell: Camp Winston Partnership Wraps

Camp Winston Greenhouse 2024

Third-year co-op student Cassidy Ho led DAS’s final Camp Winston project, capping off years of impactful collaboration with the camp that supports children with neurobiological challenges. The project, a new greenhouse, adds to the thriving community of structures on the Sparrow Lake site. Its dome structure, framed with custom wood joints and clad in polycarbonate, creates a welcoming space that harmonizes with its natural surroundings, enabling individuals to connect with the environment and learn to grow plants. This diagrid-panelled addition represents both the buildable limit of the site and a heartfelt conclusion to an inspiring partnership.

Thank you, Camp Winston, for allowing us to be part of your inspiring journey!

DAS Student Represents Excellence at ICERI Conference

Second-year student Arjun Jain recently represented the Department of Architectural Science at the ICERI Conference in Seville, Spain. This internationally peer-reviewed event provided a platform to showcase department work and engage with architecture educators and researchers from around the globe.

With guidance from Professor Vincent Hui, Arjun presented collaborative projects that highlighted DAS’s unique strengths, including grassroots initiatives and industry mentorship integration. “The feedback and interest from attendees reinforced the value of what we do and affirmed the importance of sharing it on an international stage,” he reflected. The conference was also a transformative learning opportunity, offering insights into global teaching practices and research methodologies. “[It] broadened my understanding of the exciting initiatives within DAS and sparked ideas for enhancing our own practices,” Arjun shared.

Honoring 50 Years of the Library Building

This year marks the 50th anniversary of TMU’s library building, a brutalist landmark that reflects the university’s commitment to creativity, scholarship, and innovation. To celebrate, TMU Library collaborated with Assistant Professor Carlo Parente and Professor Vincent Hui, graduate student Olivia Nunn, and a team of undergraduate students to create four engaging pillars.

These pillars showcase an interactive timeline, unique Library artifacts, and thought-provoking reflections on the Library’s evolving role as a community hub. When combined, the pillars form a replica of the Library building itself, inviting visitors to explore its past and envision its future.
